Community Green Group Bike Donation

BOSTON SPA, WETHERBY & VILLAGES COMMUNITY GREEN GROUP DONATE SURPLUS BIKES TO MCF
The Boston Spa, Wetherby & Villages Community Green Group was set up by Penny Stables in June 2019 with the aims of: reducing carbon emissions, increasing biodiversity and reducing waste and increasing recycling in their local communities.

The bike recycling scheme (Big Bike Fix) started in January 2021 as part of the Green Group’s recycling activities, collecting unwanted bikes from the local community. A small team of volunteers help to refurbish the bikes, which are then donated to families and individuals in inner city areas of Leeds, who would otherwise be unable to afford a bike. The group also sells a small number of the refurbished bikes to help cover the cost of spare parts. In 2021 200 bikes were donated.

The community group has access to a garage for storage and take bike donations most Saturday mornings. The response in the local area has been so positive that the group has more bikes than the volunteers have been able to fix and they have been running out of space to store them.

Karen Stromberg of the Boston Green Group had heard of an organisation that supported prisoners in developing bike fixing skills and a quick internet search brought her to the MCF website!

MCF is always grateful for donations of unrefurbished bikes to supply our workshops so we were more than happy to take the van to Boston Spa to collect the surplus from the Green Group.
